This past weekend we had the honor of entertaining Judy & Herb Hollinger (Lesley's parents)! They arrived on Thursday and stayed til Sunday morning, giving us lots of time to show them Portland and our new stomping grounds. We started things off with a delicious fresh haddock dinner at our apartment on Thursday night, and woke bright and early on Friday for a land and sea tour of the city. The cute trolley took us to see all the historic sites in the city and then across the bridge to see Portland Head Light. Everything was going smoothly until our trolley broke down on the way to the Head Light! Luckily they had another trolley that zoomed over to us and whisked us off to see the lighthouse. Our afternoon tour was by boat, where we saw lots of the Casco Bay islands, as well as seals (or "seadogs" as they are known here) who were playing in the harbor. Finally we saw the Head Light by boat, where the 8 foot swell was very impressive as the waves crashed on the rocks.
Friday night we walked into Old Port and ate at a fabulous little restaurant called Walters. Yumm!
On Saturday the rain changed our plans to see the Common Grounds Fair, so we spent some time shopping at L.L.Bean in Freeport instead, followed by more seafood for lunch. We decided to catch a movie in the afternoon downtown (The Illusionist...very good!) and then had dinner back at our place. It was a relaxing weekend and we had lots of good quality time to talk and sightsee. We hope they return soon!
