The chilly weather and brilliant fall colors only mean one thing to the folks in Fryeburg...its time for the annual Fryeburg Fair! The tiny town of Fryeburg (for those that know me well may recognize this town as being where I spent my 7th grade year) plays host to the largest agricultural fair in New England. Lesley and I knew we had to jump at the chance to get some local Maine culture in us and take advantage of the beautiful fall day outside. We were amazed of the magnitude of this event. Everything from draft horse and oxen pulling competitions, pie contests, skillet throwing competions, hog shows, cattle auctions, and even harness horse racing goes on during the week long celebration of everything farm!
Our highlights included the draft horse pulling competions where burley horses drag 3600 pounds for five minutes. Then there were the ever popular hog stalls where 1000lb pigs wern't an uncommon sight!
After spending the morning searching around the animal paddocks we met my brother David, fresh off a Ecology quiz at Bridgton Academy, and went to see our first harness races.
I caught Lesley chowing down a caramel apple as the horses went racing by and we were 3 for 3 picking the winners. Its too bad we didn't bet. After that we just walked around more looking at all the interesting exhibits, eating more junk food, and purchasing things like maple cream (it has less fat than butter) which made us feel like a local...oh and broke by the end of the day.
We had a ton of fun and are planning a day hike in the Whites tommorow. I absolutly love Fall. Until then...
